About Sheldon

Sheldon is deeply invested in the southwest region of the Salt Lake Valley. As a young boy, he attended Terra Linda Elementary School in West Jordan. In 1981, his family moved from West Jordan to Riverton where he attended Riverton Elementary School, Oquirrh Hills Middle School, and then graduated from Bingham High School. Through the years, he has developed many friendships with people he interacted with at school as a child and as a parent of children in this area. Those friendships extend throughout the entire southwest region of the county. In 1995, Sheldon met and married his wife Heather Maughan and they have been married for over 25 years. Together they have 3 wonderful children who have attended schools throughout the Jordan School District and all graduated from Herriman High School. All three of their children are now married and have graduated from college in various areas of interest.

Sheldon earned an Associates of Science Degree in Environmental Science, which allowed him to earn and receive his Hazardous Waste Operations certification and Emergency Medical Training. He then pursued an Associates of Science in Business Management, continued on earning a Bachelors of Science in Finance from the University of Utah, and finished up with an MBA in Global Management from the University of Phoenix. During his career, he has worked in the banking, software, and healthcare industries, and is currently an executive with a bank located in South Jordan. Sheldon's children and their spouses, as well as his parents and extended family, are residents of Bluffdale, Riverton, South Jordan, Herriman, and West Jordan.

Sheldon currently serves as a member of the Riverton City Council and the Mayor Pro Tem representing the residents of District 1 which is the western most portion of Riverton City. As a member of the city council, Sheldon serves as a Redevelopment Area Board Member, the current Finance Committee Chair and Board Member for the Unified Fire Authority (UFA), and is currently the Vice Chair for both the Riverton Law Enforcement Service Area (RLESA) and Riverton Fire Service Area (RFSA).

Previously, Sheldon was the Chairman of the Board of South Valley Services, a local non-profit entity that helps victims of domestic violence. Sheldon also served as the chair for the UFA during the transition of the fire chief, bringing transparency to the organization by working directly with the State Auditor, the new fire chief at the time, and members of the finance committee to clear concerns found in the state audit regarding the UFA.

Sheldon is very service oriented and has spent many of his summer vacations cycling, hiking, and navigating the rivers and lakes of Utah with the youth of this southwest area. Sheldon was raised with a service-oriented focus in his life and enjoys meeting and working with people towards a common goal. As a resident and councilmember, Sheldon has witnessed massive growth in the southwest region of Salt Lake County, and with this focus on service to the community has been a responsive and trusted member of our community, understanding the unique challenges and needs of our area. Sheldon is humbled by the trust the residents of Riverton have placed in him in his capacity serving as a member of the Riverton City Council and looks forward to expanding his role as the next Salt Lake County Council Member for District 5. Sheldon's leadership demonstrates that for Sheldon, Actions are more important than Words; a vote for Sheldon is a vote for Action not Words!
